How SE tax works, the deductible portion, and guidance on quarterly estimated payments.
Key Topics
Step-by-Step Guide
1
Calculate Net Self-Employment Income
Subtract all legitimate business expenses from your gross self-employment earnings to arrive at net earnings.
2
Apply the 92.35% Adjustment
Multiply net earnings by 92.35% (half of 1% reduction for the deduction adjustment). This gives your net earnings subject to SE tax.
3
Calculate Total SE Tax
Apply 15.3% to the adjusted net earnings. The Social Security portion only applies up to the annual wage base cap.
4
Deduct the Employer Equivalent
Subtract 50% of your SE tax from your AGI as the above-the-line deduction for the employer-equivalent portion.
5
Make Quarterly Estimated Payments
Use IRS Form 1040-ES to calculate and pay your estimated taxes each quarter to avoid underpayment penalties.
